New guidelines for N.J. Amber Alerts are less rigid after alleged East Orange baby abduction by father

TRENTON -- Attorney General Paula Dow said today new guidelines on Amber Alerts will allow the notices to be broadcast in situations where children are abducted by family members.

The state's current rules discourage using the alerts, intended to notify the public about missing children, in domestic custody cases.

The changes come in the wake of a February incident during which a father allegedly abducted his 3-month-old daughter then threw her off the Driscoll Bridge into the Raritan River. No Amber Alert was ready to be issued until four hours after the abduction, when the father was already arrested.
