No one knows why the afflicted wander, but we know the fear of loved ones becoming lost.

Dementia is the condition that describes diminishing cognitive skills. Alzheimer’s — like Parkinson’s and vascular disease — is a sickness that causes dementia.

Today, more than 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. That number is expected to grow to 20 million in the coming years, according to researchers at George Mason University. Though there is no way to be certain, the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that some 60 percent of those with the disease will wander at some point.

Alzheimer’s disease kills nerve cells, hampers connectivity between neurons and damages tissue in the brain, the association reports. Eventually, the brain begins to shrivel dramatically. The cortex, home of thinking, planning and memory, shrinks. So does the hippocampus, where new memories are created. Researchers are not exactly sure why Alzheimer’s disease affects the brain the way it does. It could be the abnormal buildup — and entanglement — of proteins among nerve cells.

Scientists are also not sure why dementia often leads to roaming. But there is this sobering statistic from the Alzheimer’s Association: About 50 percent of people who wander will suffer serious injury or death if they are not found within 24 hours.

In the moderate to severe cases, the wandering pattern is random. Many patients seem to respond to circadian rhythms. At the end of the day and in the evening, there is the “sundowning” phenomenon, during which people exhibit all sorts of difficult behavior, Koester says, such as anger and stubbornness.

Occasionally, people will leave and not return — professionals call it “elopement” — and that can pose added dangers. Most people are found. It may be in a closet – at the end of a suburban street, in the mud, in thick woods, or near a lake.

GPS Shoes For Wanderers

As families and health professionals have become more aware of dementia and its patterns — and lack of patterns — they have devised various methods of dealing with wanderers.

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests making sure patients who begin to show signs of memory loss get exercise and keep their minds active. Certain drugs may slow the advance of the disease. There are practical steps to take, such as putting deadbolts on doors of homes and security devices in senior-living facilities and cutting back on the availability of liquids at night to keep patients from getting up to go to the bathroom. Certain organizations suggest dressing a wanderer in bright, reflective clothing and making sure the person is carrying identification.

As the numbers of Alzheimer’s patients grow, organizations and companies are developing potentially helpful technologies. A shoe company, Aetrex Worldwide, and a firm that makes global positioning devices, GTX Corp., have created shoes containing GPS technology for wanderers to wear.

While we may not understand “wandering” or how GPS tracking works, we can and do understand the enormous pressure caregivers are under and the peace of mind that a device that can locate loved ones is a solution for a problem that is not going to go away.

The Loons are back on Golden Pond.

Ernest Thompson, wrote the original stage play of On Golden Pond and adapted it for the Mark Rydell 1981 film. Henry Fonda, in his last role, plays a prickly English professor; Norman Thayer, at the disagreeable age of 80. Visiting his summer house by a lake, Norman suffers the disorienting effects of dementia getting lost in a strawberry patch mere feet from his front door.

Its been thirty-years since the movie was screened and we barely know much more about dementia than we did then. No cure has been found and treatments have proven to be only mildly helpful as the condition is aggressively progressive ultimately rendering the victims lost within themselves.

Dementia may take many forms – more than seventy – and its effects can be felt at any age. The symptoms and behaviors of the various forms of the illness progress over long spans – often twenty years or more – placing ever greater demands on family caregivers of which there are more than fifteen million today in the US alone.

What we do know of dementia is that the aging boomer generation population will force the number of the afflicted and their demands for support to balloon to staggering proportions. The toll of the epidemic for the nation, their caregivers and the demented will overwhelm the systems and services in place today.

Sundowning is a tragic aspect of dementia. As the day moves to night something misfires in the minds of the victims and they become disoriented often eloping from facilities, or while out and about and yes even picking strawberries. The problem is that they cannot find their way home.
As night approaches they become invisible and often succumb to the elements before they are found less than a thousand feet from home.

Locating the lost has been a mission for GPS technology company; GTX Corp GTX Corp (OTCBB: GTXO) and its CEO Patrick Bertagna for years. This month though that mission will be completed with the retail availability of a discreet 2-way GPS device embedded within a comfort shoe GPS Shoe technology manufactured by Aetrex Worldwide and supported by MedicAlert www.medicalert.org and Onmilink Systems www.omnilink.com to provide secure, real-time, location based services to caregivers offering them peace of mind and the afflicted with a better quality of life as they will not need to be confined to protect them from their debilities.

Some may see this service as an invasion of privacy. We see it as life-saving search and rescue. Ask yourself, if it was your parent and you had the shoes would you tie the laces.

There is no forgetting Alzheimer's

We are the sum of our memories… remembrances tucked neatly into three pound cerebral packages as fragile as a potato chip with one hundred trillion incomprehensible pathways taken completely for granted until it malfunctions.
Alzheimer’s afflicts the brains of five million Americans today, but by 2050 this 21st century plague will take 15 million mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. Worse still, this disease victimizes many for every brain it actually infects – sucking the life from families and care givers.
The estimated monetary cost of $700 billion will pale by comparison to the loss of productivity and intellectual wealth which will diminish our civilization imprisoning the memories of a generation in a crib of cerebral plaque.
The progression of Alzheimer’s will cause one of every four victims to wander…
If not found quickly, they will succumb to the elements, accidents or attacks. Searching for them…hundreds of thousands of them at a time…will precipitate the collapse of our municipal and health support systems.
One possible solution is incarceration, another is sedative drugs, but one other provides care givers with the ability to manage their charges whereabouts by tracking their locations in real time with a miniaturized GPS transceiver sending signals to computers, cell phones or mobile devices… a personal location service.

If the shoe fits, wear it.

Alzheimer’s is still a disease that is routinely diagnosed only after death and autopsy. Then, it is easy to recognize the disease’s cardinal features: a shrunken brain dotted with amyloid plaques interspersed among neurons containing tangled fibrils, which may also contain inclusions similar to those found in the brains of Parkinson’s patients.

Between the first signs of cognitive dysfunction and the eventuality of the disease decades can pass placing caregivers under interminable pressure to maintain the wellness and quality of life of the afflicted… as well as their own.

During the progression of the disease many will succumb to eloping or wandering from their caregivers. Tracking their whereabouts has proved to be difficult at best with many succumbing to the elements before they are retrieved.

GTX Corp in partnership with Aetrex Worldwide has developed and will shortly be selling a sport shoe with an embedded 2-way GPS transceiver enabling real time pin-point location, bearing and speed on any web enabled platform. While we look for a cure, we should not have to look for our loved ones… so if the shoe fits get some peace of mind.

One-way GPS device (PND) sales decline as two-way GPS smartphones offer turn by turn navigation and other personal location services.

PNDs are fast being cannibalized as Google and smartphone makers such as Nokia offer free turn-by-turn navigation.

Google’s no-cost Maps app, bundled with Android smartphones, includes voice directions and turn-by-turn navigation, just like the stand-alone big boys. (This is a category in which Androids clearly trump iPhones. The iPhone’s Google Maps app does not offer these features.)

A total of about 41.5 million PND units were shipped in 2010 and that will dip to 39.2 million units this year, according to market research firm IHS iSuppli. Berg Insight sees shipments dropping by a fifth, to 34 million units, by 2015. IHS expects more than 135 million navigation-enabled smartphones to be sold this year, while such phones already in use will almost double to 269 million by 2013.

If you were wondering where the answer to the “where is” the 2-way GPS smartphone business going, skip the Google search and go straight to GTX Corp and its LOCiMOBILE subsidiary.

LOCiMOBILE GPS Tracking apps ride the Android wave of popularity.

Google’s operating system for cellphones has overtaken Nokia’s Symbian system as the market leader. In the three months through December, manufacturers shipped 33.3 million cellphones running Android, Google’s free, open-source cellphone operating system, up from just 4.7 million a year earlier, according to Canalys, a research firm in Reading, England.

Analysts said the figures represented a tectonic shift in the industry, cementing the influence of Google’s advertising-driven business on the mobile Internet. And this year, according to the research firm Gartner, more people will gain access to the Internet through mobile devices than with personal computers.

Knowing where to find 'what' makes 'who' quite valuable.

While nearly everyone knows that GPS is an acronymn for Global Positioning Satellites, few understand how many different applications of the technology there are beyond the dash board navigation systems or the GPS enabled cell phones for which we have become so fond.

Tracking people, vehicles and valuables can be enabled by palm-sized portable devices like the gpVector miniMT that allow enterprises to provide security and recovery services that are invaluable to subscribing clients. As the marketplace learns of these applications the growth of GPS service bureaus will spread around the world.

For the small business or the multinational corporation, monitoring has become an intrinsic touch point governing all end to end business practices. This tremendous cost saving advantage can be uniquely customized to accommodate any requirement.

Knowledge is more than a tool. It is a solution.

Groupon Valuation Soars as Possible I.P.O. Nears

So what is LOCiMOBILE's valuation with its new APP- LOCi Deals?

GTX Corp Expands into Emerging Proximity Marketing Business

with Adam, Inc to Deliver Real Time Daily Promotions from over 100,000 Chamber of Commerce Businesses to 1 Million LOCiMOBILE® users.

In contrast to the sea of deep discounts on its Web site, the valuation of Groupon keeps moving higher.

The social shopping site, which recently spurned a $6 billion takeover offer from Google, has held discussions with Goldman Sachs bankers about a possible initial public offering that could value the company at close to $25 billion, according to a person close to the matter who was not authorized to speak because the talks were private. Dear GTX Corp,

I was lucky enough to have been lent one of your GL 100 LOCi GPS tracking devices for a recent high school project. It worked tremendously and I want to describe the experience for you.

On May 22nd, 2010, a balloon containing probes and an HD video camera constructed by 12 students at The Bay School of San Francisco was launched from Carmel State River Beach, and traveled over 75,000 feet into the air before bursting and returning to earth some 80 minutes later. The balloon and its attached equipment traveled close to 80 miles east, landing on the edge of the central valley.

In order to observe the movements vertically and horizontally of the balloon, including locating its landing spot so that recovery could be achieved, the team of students used three separate methods to track the travel of the near space balloon. One of these methods was the use of a LOCi tracker. This device, only a couple inches in length, is a new design from GTX Corp (GTXO) using a multi-step process to track whatever it is attached to in real time. The first operation is to figure out its location by triangulation from satellites, using standard GPS technology. It then broadcasts its location in cellular wave format, using standard cell towers to get the information back to GTX's servers, where the location is stored for the end user to see via GTX's website.

Traveling up to 75,000 feet in the air, and surviving under the extreme conditions that prevail there is an extreme challenge for any electronic device, but the LOCi tracker preformed admirably, recording its location and sending out its location whenever it was possible to establish a connection to a cell tower. When the balloon had traveled to a certain height, it was impossible to reach down to the cell towers which were not designed for this purpose, so there is a temporary blank spot on the map when this occurred, however, after the balloon ascended to within range of a cell tower, it immediately began re-broadcasting.

The LOCi tracker worked remarkably well in finding its location and sending it back out so that from anywhere in the world, we could view its location via internet. The genius of the design is in the simplicity. There is very few ways for this to go wrong, and we did not experience any of it. Without accurate tracking on the balloon, we not only would not have known its height and travel pattern, but we also never would have found where it landed, which was necessary to recover the recorded video. The LOCi tracker never failed in this regard.

Here is a webpage including information about, and a video of, the flight of the near space balloon: http://ikaros.xrg.us/.
